Asian Pears

Although the outside appearance of each Asian Pear may differ, all Asian Pears are crunchy, juicy and sweet. A good-quality Asian Pear is selected by smell rather than variations in firmness. Unlike other pears that yield to gentle pressure when ripe, Asian pears are ripe even when they are extremely firm. Look for a fairly strong and sweet aroma as an indicator of ripeness. The texture of the skin of an Asian pear is typically a little gritty and not as soft as that of other pears. And, while the flesh isn't especially juicy (relatively speaking) it has a crispness that typically seems crunchy.
